The list was compiled from the many different
audience and critic's polls that are shown on the greatest
lists page as well as lists compiled by regular contributors to
SBwebspace.com. Voting came to an end in April 2008 and the results were
first published on the 1st May 2008.
View Results ~ We are not, of course, going to arrogantly suggest this is the most definitive of all film lists. The purpose of these sorts of polls is to stimulate healthy debate and to get people thinking about what makes a great film. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it is Orson Welles's Citizen Kane that took top spot in the poll as the film has consistently topped a variety of different types of film lists over the last sixty years. Alfred Hitchcock has the highest number of films in the list with 11. Steven Spielberg has 10 even though he has only one entry in the top 100 (Schindler's List - 19). Stanley Kubrick has 9 with both 2001 (4) and Dr. Strangelove (20) in the top 20. Akira Kurosawa has 8 in the list with Seven Samurai (8) and Rashomon (21) well placed. Others: 7 Films - Luis Bunuel, Billy Wilder, Robert Bresson, Martin Scorsese, 6 - Jean Luc-Godard, John Ford, Howard Hawks, Charles Chaplin, Federico Fellini, 5 - Ingmar Bergman, Orson Welles, Michael Powell, Michelangelo Antonioni, Jean Renoir, F.W. Murnau. |
